Nick Pilaud
Nick joined the lab in 2015, is a senior in Environmental Science, and is testing if brush piles made of invasive plant species can enhance native biodiversity. This fieldwork is conducted at Ascot Hills Park in northeast Los Angeles. Nick is a co-author on ‘Using DNA barcoding to track seafood mislabeling in Los Angeles restaurants’, and with Sofia, has received multiple conference accolades for this work. Nick will graduate in Spring 2019 and take a Gap year prior to heading off to grad school.

Jackie Galvez
Jackie is a senior in Biology and joined the lab in 2016. Jackie’s current research looks at the effects of increasing global temperatures on the germination rate of native California black walnut seeds. Jackie has participated in multiple summer research program, including at the Chicago Field Museum, and is also conducts research with Dr. Wendy Binder at LMU. Jackie will graduate in Spring 2019 and has accepted an offer at UC Berkeley for her PhD.

Sophie Deen
Sophie joined the lab in 2016 and is a senior in Health and Human Sciences. Her research assesses the capability of a plasmodial slime mold species to solve transit networks on 3D printed terrains. She is using the urban landscape and traffic systems of Los Angeles to test her model. Sophie also conducts research with Dr. McCormack at LMU. Sophie will graduate in Spring 2019 and has accepted an offer at USC for a doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Candice Cross
Candice is a senior in Biology at LMU and joined the lab in 2017. Candice’s current research examines the capacity of seagrasses as a natural ‘blue carbon sink’ and their efficiency in sequestering carbon. Candice has conducted seagrass fieldwork in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Honduras, and Bonaire. Candice is currently co-authoring three scientific papers and has accepted an offer at UCLA for her PhD with Dr. Paul Barber.

Sydney LeeSydney joined the lab in 2017 and is a Junior in Biology at LMU. Sydney’s current research examines the accumulation of microplastics in crustaceans, with the aim of following the plastic up the food chain. Sydney’s work is also in collaboration with several LMU engineering students and Dr. Hossein Asghari to use optical coherence tomography to detect the microplastics in living tissues.

Kesterlyn Wilson
Kesterlyn is Junior in Biology and joined the lab in 2017. Kesterlyn conducts fieldwork at Ascot Hills Park, an urban park in northeast Los Angeles. Her research assesses the current and future value of ecosystem services of this young park by assigning a dollar value to free services the park provides such as air purification, reduction of urban heat island effect, and recreation. Kesterlyn has presented at multiple conferences and plans to attend medical school after graduating.

Matt SheridanMatt joined the lab in 2017 as a joint researcher with LMU’s Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) [Please add hyperlink to CURes website at LMU] and is a Senior in Biology. Matt has carried the effort to develop a rapid screening method for detecting cat and dog DNA in coyote scat samples using molecular genetics.

Leo Gonzalez-SmithLeo joined the lab in 2018 and is a Sophomore in Biology. Leo is exploring the evolutionary origins of a threatened freshwater sardine, Sardinella tawilis, that is endemic to Taal Lake – a lake within a volcanic caldera that was isolated from the sea as recently as 300 years ago. Leo uses SNPs to genotype and contrast S. tawilis from Taal Lake, Philippines to those of its marine sister species Sardinella hualiensis from Taiwan.

Stacy LamStacy joined the lab in 2018 and is a Sophomore in Biology. Stacy is working on The Los Angeles Seafood Monitoring Project with Mary, conducting molecular genetics methods on the monthly seafood samples collected from restaurants across LA. Stacy presented her research for the first time this year at WCBSUR.
|
Anna HorvathAnna joined the lab in 2018 and is a Sophomore in Biology. Anna is starting new research in Ecosystem Services from urban parks, specifically at the role urban parks play in academic performance in K-12 grades.
|
Selena YuanXiaoya ‘Selena’ Yuan joined the lab as our Rains Research Assistant in 2018 and is a Freshman in Biology. Selena splits her time between assisting in logistics of multiple projects in the lab and working with Nick and Jackie on the Ascot Hills Park brush piles project.
|
Mary BalducciMary joined the lab in 2018 for her capstone project and is a Senior in Biology. Mary works on The Los Angeles Seafood Monitoring Project with Stacy, with her focus on sequencing the monthly seafood samples from restaurants around LA.
